People! We need to make sure you know about an incredible toy company called Goldieblox. They launched in 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign to change the definition of a “girl toy.” They made their goal in 4 DAYS!
There is no endorsement deal here, we just really, really, love them.
Because they are giving girls examples of incredible careers.
Because they are giving girls exposure to something they might not otherwise learn about.
Because they are giving the “normal girl toys” a run for their money.
These super awesome book-and-toy combos are the brainchild of Debbie Sterling, a Stanford graduate and engineer. She spoke about the male-dominated field of engineering in 2013 Ted Talk that, and said that “with half the population being female, we deserve to hear the female perspective. It’ll only get better with the female perspective.”
She also referenced the huge culture gap in the US when it comes to educating women and girls in math and science. In most every country but America, girls outperform boys. She backs this up with a personal childhood anecdote, saying, “I wanted to be pretty – I didn’t want to be smart.”
This doesn’t have to be the way IT IS. There is so much potential!
We’re not saying one kind of toy is right and the other is wrong, but we are asking you to consider your options! The way the girls in your life perceive technical careers and female stereotypes begins with YOU. She is watching and listening to how you talk about your own abilities, and how some things are “for girls” and some are “for boys.”
Goldieblox says: “We believe there are a million girls out there who are engineers. They just might not know it yet!”
